Our Story

Øra nØir is an independent Virginia-based saxophone quartet committed to creating chamber music experiences that are emotional, distinctive, and inviting. Formed through a shared desire to rethink how classical music is presented and experienced, the ensemble creates programs that bring together familiar works and music they care deeply about, highlighting Black composers and musicianship as an essential part of that artistic vision.

What began as a passion project has grown into a collaborative artistic vision shaped by curiosity, purpose, and a commitment to meaningful engagement. Øra nØir designs programs that bring together classical repertoire, contemporary works, and music by Black composers, creating performances that invite audiences into the artistic process rather than placing them at a distance.

The ensemble’s founding members are Dykeem Cervantes (soprano), Gregory Thompson (alto), Tyrique Payne (tenor), and Dylan Royal (baritone). Collectively, they bring training and experience from leading institutions including the Eastman School of Music, Northern Arizona University, James Madison University, American University, and UNC Greensboro.

At the heart of Øra nØir’s work is a simple belief: chamber music can be both artistically rigorous and deeply human. By approaching each performance with intention and care, the ensemble continues to explore new ways of sharing music that feels relevant, engaging, and lasting.
